IT’S SPOOKY SZN
The wind is colder, the leaves are redder, the pumpkin lattes are spicier and it is officially spooky season so this week’s selection has seven tunes that will hopefully get you in the mood for this dark and mellow time of the year.
It’s Now or Never - Elvis Presley (1960)
Soft, deep, honey-like vocals and arrangement. Elvis may not have written a song in his entire career but he could sing like no other.
Can You Get To That - Funkadelic (1971)
I knew that the seventies pick was going to be either a parliament or a funkadelic song, so what better option than this classic reboot. The shift and mix of low and high vocals has always given me this spooky, almost cartoonish, feel. Not to mention the iconic cover.
Underwater Boy - Virna Lindt (1984)
I stumbled upon this song a few weeks ago and was shocked that this came out in the 80s. I suggest you listen to this one with headphones just so that you can have the full experience of being hypnotized by the bass and appreciate all the little details like the captivating and sudden vocal glitches.
Kinky Love - Pale Saints (1991)
Dark and mellow = shoegaze, of course.
Dracula’s Wedding - Outkast (ft. Kelis) (2003)
Okay maybe this one is not dark or mellow, but if your weekend plans actually involve leaving the house and hanging out with friends this is the spooky-themed song you will add to the queue when it’s your turn, it’s an order.
The Hollow Sound of the Morning Chimes - TOPS (2015)
The title is spot on because this song makes me feel like when you wake up really early and the sun is just going up. Smooth, chill, soothing, and dream-like vibes.
Doce Navajas - Adiós Amores (2021)
Adiós Amores is a duo of two Spanish girls that with only six released songs have already established their sound, which is a mix of the seventies pop of artists like Jeanette and contemporary psychedelic bands like La Femme. This is also the spookiest one of the six so enjoy.
Save these songs for later or listen to them right now but don't forget to hit me with your comments or recs @signodepesos or @grounded_musique and keep it spooky.
