Friday is here and you already know how this goes. Like every other week, I have a selection of seven songs for you to time travel through the decades while shaking that algorithm. So save the playlist and let’s begin:
Sun - Margo Guryan (1968)
Pop
Margo passed away two weeks ago so in her honor we’re starting the mix revisiting this lovely track from her first album, Take a Picture. A love letter to the sun on cloudy days.
I Thought It Was You - Herbie Hancock (1978)
Jazz / Funk
Disco-based Herbie Hancock. This album was his first one with vocals, which he recorded with the help of a Sennheiser Vocoder. The arrangements are meticulous and chaotic at the same time. A long one, but worth it.
¡gózame Ya! - Susana Estrada (1981)
Funk / Erotic
A track worthy of one of spain’s more iconic sex symbols. I don’t know if I need to say this but, definitely NSFW.
Ziggy (Aphex Twin Mix #1) - Nav Katze (1994)
Techno / Ambient
The japanese duo’s usual mellow pop gets a techno twist in their 1994 remix album Never Mind the Distorsion. The original track sounds very different but this Aphex Twin version allures you into its calmly effervescent layers of techno ambience.
Strange Things Will Happen - The Radio Dept. (2004)
Dream Pop
Charming ethereal indie-pop with delicate guitar strums, soft vocals and enticing keyboards that feel like magic
Southbound Station - Omni (2017)
Post-Punk
With punchy guitars and spontaneous melodies, this whole album is kind of like if Devo and Television had a millennial love child.
Where It’s Hiding - ThisIsDA (2021)
Hip-Hop / Rap
An up and coming rapper from the UK who can’t stop himself from releasing great songs. Seriously, he dropped three albums and an EP in just two years and he produces everything from his bedroom.
Save these songs for later or listen to them right now but don't forget to hit me with your comments or recs @signodepesos or @grounded_musique and subscribe to get more recs straight to your inbox.
