This week we have a special guest doing the hot recs. Mónica (@signodepesos) is a friend and fellow music enthusiast. Here are her hot recs:
When free-spirited Frag asked me to give out a few song recs for today’s newsletter I immediately asked him what the theme was “hot music recs” he said, but because there’s just too many great songs out there to start with and because I cant stop myself (idk its virgo szn) i decided to give mine a little structure. So I have 7 songs for your ears today, one from each decade from 60s to 20s. Let’s time travel.
I Had The Craziest Dream - Astrud Gilberto (1966)
A bossa nova take on an American classic. And yes, you are allowed to have your 60’s it girl fantasy while listening. Go for it.
Intergalactic Love Song - The Diddy’s, Paige Douglas (1977)
I don’t know much about The Diddy’s apart from this one but what a song. It serves you exactly what the title says and then covers it with funk bass. Definitely in my playlist of: “songs i would groove to if I were rich enough to afford becoming a space tourist”
El Eterno Femenino - La Mode (1982)
Boom, we’re in Spain. And it’s the eighties. I wont lie to you I just love everything about this, from the sharp and heavy synths to the light and effortless lyrics. Also, Im pretty sure the cover art is how the inside of my head looks like. Not to make this personal or anything…
I Wish - Skee-Lo (1995)
Surprise Quiz! Name something better than self-praise in hip hop. Ready? It’s self-deprecation in hip hop! That’s Skee-Lo in his hit song. Kinda pop, kinda funky, kinda funny.
Friend Of Mine - Lilly Allen (2006)
If you only read the lyrics to this one you would expect the music to have some hmm… aggressive vibes, but instead they’re delivered in the chillest way possible. Although it wasn’t a single this is probably the song that better shows the pop meets reggae style that Lilly was going for on this album.
Want Your Feeling - Jessie Ware (2014)
I just need to hear this in a dark room, surrounded by people bouncing their body to the beat… I think it was called a club…
Ung 엉 - SE SO NEON (2020)
I really dig se so neon. This band just has it own sound, I mean they are already at the front of the alternative rock wave but they keep experimenting, which makes their name (“new youth” in korean) really fit them. And they don’t even have a full album yet!
