Good Morning!
Time travel is a monthly newsletter where we listen to one song from each decade (60s to 020s) picked by me, the voice in your head.
For April’s trip we are diving into some 60s psych rock, some 70s post-punk, and even some 00’s ska, so LFG
60s: Why Did I Get so High? - The Peanut Butter Conspiracy (1967)
You know I love to give a little wink to whatever month we’re in so what better way to start the fourth month of the year’s selections than with this psych rock song by the band with one of the best names I’ve ever heard.
Why did I get so high
Just to fall from the sky?
Why did I get so high
Just to see our love die?
70s: Outdoor Miner - Wire (1978)
Alternative post-punk band from the 70’s. This is one of those songs that at first listen made me think that it sounds ahead of its time but then I realized that it probably actually inspired a lot of alt indie pop bands from the 90s. Thoughts?
He lies on his side, is he trying to hide?
In fact it's the earth, which he's known since birth
80s: Wan Light - Orange Juice (1982)
Sunny pop by the Scottish post-punk band Orange Juice, this is from their debut album You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever and also one of my personal favorites from them.
Wan light surrounds my heart
Its chimes make light of this dismal plight
Is this what life is all about?
90s: Bluebeard - Cocteau Twins (1993)
Cocteau Twins are one of the best at surrounding you in an ethereal atmosphere with their songs and this is no exception. This one is from their 7th studio album, Four-Calendar Café. Long live dream pop.
Aliveness, exploration
Aliveness, energy
Are you the right man for me?
Are you safe? Are you my friend?
00s: Sin Ti - King Changó (2000)
I think this is the first time we listen to some ska on this newsletter and I'm glad that we’re debuting the genre with this latin ska classic from King Changó. He was originally from Venezuela but based in New York City, which you can hear in the mix of both languages and the synth touches.
Es que mi vida sin ti!
No puedo vivir no.
I have to get on my knees & pray
Cuz baby you're so tough, so tough.
10s: La fessée - Claire Laffut (2018)
French pop by Belgian artist, model, and singer Claire Laffut. This is the last track from her first EP and even though this is not her most popular song there’s something so refreshing about it, not to mention the catchy chorus singing about spanking. Yeah, spanking.
Vous me voyez là, je suis posée
Mon cœur a conservé tous ses papiers
La musique vient peu, un peu réveiller
Tout ce dont j'avais prévu de me passer
020s: honey thighs - strongboi (2020)
‘strongboi’ is the fresh side-project of Alice Phoebe Lou in collaboration with her bandmate Ziv Yamin. They’ve only released 4 singles but the genre-hopping and arrangements they have done in each one of them is really exciting and I can’t wait to see what direction the project goes to in the future. They also have great music videos up on their youtube channel.
There's something pretty big about the small things
Just shake it up you're doing just fine
All you've ever done, my darling
Is just try to feel alright
