Good Morning!
Time travel is a monthly newsletter where we listen to one song from each decade (60s to 020s) picked by me, the RCA cable you lost last year.
This month we have some psych rock from the 60s, Icelandic alt rock from the 90s and even some newly released electro pop.
60s: Crimson & Clover - Tommy James & The Shondells (1968)
One of the best songs from the sixties and a whole passionate experience for sure, this is one of those timeless songs that you want to listen to over and over, over and over, over and over, over an
Now, I don't hardly know her,
But I think I could love her
Crimson and clover.
I wish she'd come walking over
70s: Island Letter - Shuggie Otis (1974)
Now that we’ve been doing this for five consecutive months and we’re in this circle of trust I can tell you that this has been quite a psychedelic month for me and this is one of my favorite albums for when I’m in that mood. It really needs no introduction but in case you don’t know Shuggie Otis let me just say two words: psychedelic funk.
How did you think about me at all?
Or just happened to hear my call?
Cuz I didn't get the chance to tell you
That I would want to see you again
80s: New Sensations - Lou Reed (1984)
I’ve been a fan of Lou Reed for some time now, but it was not until recently that I dove into his 80’s albums. It's cool to hear how he translates his signature sound in each decade and I wouldn’t say it's his best song but it’s not even half bad.
I want the principles of a timeless muse
I want to eradicate my negative views
And get rid of those people who are always on a down
90s: Hit - The Sugarcubes (1992)
An alternative rock band all the way from Iceland, or should I say the alternative rock band from Iceland. Hit was the first single from The Sugarcubes last album Stick Around For Joy and yes that is Björk singing main vocals.
This wasn't supposed to happen
I was happy by myself
Accidentally you seduced me
I'm in love again
00s: Dewy Roses - Pitcher56 (2008)
Indie pop from 00’s Japan with water drop sounds, a dreamy chorus and then boom, that guitar. It's really hard to find any information on Pitcher56 but from what I found it seems like the band was formed by a trio of friends, Hiroyuki Morita (guitar, bass, drums, and programming), Manabu Takano (guitar and vocals), and Yuki Nakano when they were medical students and the three of them are doctors today.
10s: Last Night - Dabeull (2019)
Neo funk from French DJ and producer Dabeull. This entire EP gives off the coolest vibe for when you want to chill drinking a mojito under the apocalyptic sun. The synthesizers and drum machines wrap it up quite nicely as well.
Last night,
I went to a party, hun
After a long a week of work, yeah
I saw you on the side, leaning at the bar
And talking to another man, girl
20s: Making Sense Stop - Charlotte Adigéry, Bolis Pupul (2022)
Topical Dancer is one of the most interesting albums I’ve listened to this year; the Belgian duo produces rich electro pop that will have you dancing while addressing topics that are way too relevant to our present day like racism, xenophobia and misogyny. I couldn’t decide between two songs from the album so a bonus rec: Blenda with the amazing hook “Go back to your country where you belong / Siri, can you tell me where I belong?”
You need to welcome your intuition,
Make room for your own subconscious mind,
The liberty of saying nothing
But also really meaning it.
Save your favorites, subscribe to grounded musique and leave me your comments, thoughts or recs because I’m always down to talk about music @signodepesos.
Thanks for reading and listening!
